MORE ABOUT THE STUDY PROGRAM IN GERMANY

I asked Kristin to tell us something more about their health promotion study in Magdeburg, Germany, and she sent me the following report. It sounds like a great study! Does anyone else take the challenge of presenting the health promotion study programmes at their home university? Torill

'The program of the Health promotion and –management studies is divided into two stages. The first stage, also called basic study (witch takes 1,5 years) focuses on broad orientation and foundations of the field(s) of study. An Intermediate Examination is prerequisite to enter the second stage of advanced studies and specializations (taking2,5 years), which includes two semesters of integrated and supervised work assignments. To impart knowledge the university provides basically courses, which help students develop continuously social competences as e.g. the ability to communicate, teamwork and creativity.
Combining theory and practice students have to complete both, internships in relevant institutions and also a 3 semester university project during the advanced studies. Completing the study they have to hand in a self-made degree dissertation.
Requirements for the professionalism are extensive historical, political and structural knowledge of the health systems as well as technical knowledge of biological, psychological and sociological factors of influence on health and disease. Furthermore, the following interdisciplinary knowledge is important to be imparted: Empirical social research, organizational development and management, methods of communication, moderation techniques and rhetoric.
