'The IUHPE is half a century old, and continues to be the only global organisation entirely devoted to advancing public health through health promotion and health education. The IUHPE is a leading global network working to promote health worldwide and contribute to the achievement of equity in health between and within countries. It draws its strength and authority from the qualities and commitment of its diverse network of members, and it has an established track record in advancing the knowledge base and improving the quality and effectiveness of health promotion and health education practice Members range from
government bodies, to universities and institutes, to NGOs and individuals across all continents.

The IUHPE decentralises its activity through Regional Offices. It works in close cooperation with WHO, UNESCO, UNICEF, and other major inter-governmental and non-governmental organisations to influence and facilitate the development of health promotion strategies and projects.

MISSION
The mission of The International Union for Health Promotion and Education (the IUHPE) is to promote global health and to contribute to the achievement of equity in health between and within countries of the world.

The IUHPE fulfils its mission by building and operating an independent, global, professional network of people and institutions to encourage the free exchange of ideas, knowledge, know-how, experiences, and the development of relevant collaborative projects, both at global and regional levels.

GOALS
The IUHPE has four goals:

a) Advocate for health
to advocate for actions that promote the health of populations throughout the world.

b) Build knowledge of effective health promotion and health education
to develop the knowledge base for health promotion and health education;

c) Improve effectiveness of policy and practice
to improve and advance the quality and effectiveness of health promotion and health education practice and knowledge.

d) Build capacity for health promotion and health education
to contribute to the development of capacity in countries to undertake health promotion and health education activities.

OBJECTIVES
The IUHPE will pursue these goals by:
-strengthening the capacity of the organisation;
-advocating for investment in health promotion and health education by governments, intergovernmental organisations, non-governmental organisations and the private sector;
-building alliances and partnerships amongst all sectors, based on agreed ethical principles, mutual understanding and respect;
-advocating for changes, in policy and practice of governments at all levels, organisations and sectors, that influence the determinants of the health of populations;
-undertaking activities that contribute to the development of knowledge and practice that further the field of health promotion and health education;
-disseminating evidence-based knowledge and practical experience in health promotion and health education;
-providing mechanisms for the exchange of ideas, experience and knowledge that promote health;
-providing a global forum for mutual support and professional advancement of its members.

The IUHPE will achieve its goals and objectives by implementing the following strategies:

1. Strengthening the organisation's capacity
Increasing membership in all categories and across all regions of the world, with particular emphasis on increasing the membership of developing countries.
Involving the membership (in all categories) actively in the work of the organisation.
Increasing the security of funding for the basic infrastructure of the global organisation.
Strengthening the working relationships between Headquarters and the Regional Offices, and among the Regional Offices.

2. Advocacy
Gathering and presenting the evidence to enable advocacy to be conducted by the organisation on a range of issues of international significance;
Providing consultation to governments and organisations about the implementation of effective health promotion and health education policies, strategies and structures;
Continuing to assist countries to develop and improve their national institutions for health promotion and health education.

3. Knowledge development
Continuing to carry out (or sponsor) and publish international reviews of evidence of effectiveness in health promotion and health education - with particular emphasis on drawing together evidence from across the globe;
Continuing to bring together expert researchers, practitioners and policy makers to explore emerging issues in the development of health promotion and health education - for example, the identification of measures of quality in health promotion and health education; or the identification of evaluation methods that 'fit' the complex nature of contemporary health promotion and health education;
Continuing to explore the most effective means by which to link evidence of effectiveness in health promotion and health education to the formulation and adoption of public policy.

4. Professional and Technical Development
Continuing to contribute to the professional development of health promotion and health education practitioners, and to the development of the range, quality and effectiveness of health promotion and health education across the world.
Continuing to conduct projects and technical activities with a particular focus on synthesising and disseminating information about effective practice across the world.

5. Networking
Strengthening the networks of people and institutions involved in health promotion and health education throughout the world, and creating new ones when the need arises.

6. Partnership building
Developing partnerships that will enable the organisation to increase its active role in health promotion and health education in the international arena.
Working actively with partners to influence the policies and programs of sectors and organizations that determine the health of populations and individuals. '
